Just a few kilometers northeast of Split, perched on an unscaleable cliff that looms over a gorge between the mountains Mosor and Kozjak, lies the ancient fortress of Klis. Once renowned for being the seat of Croatian dukes, this stunning feat of architecture is now best known as a filming site for HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones.
Owing to its strategic position between the towering mountains Mosor and Kozjak, the fortress of Klis has long served as Dalmatia’s major line of defense against eastern invaders, especially so against Tatars (Mongols) and Ottomans. From its humble beginnings as a small stronghold built by the ancient Illyrian tribe Dalmatae, this enduring edifice evolved into the seat of many Croatian noblemen and sovereigns, being lost and re-conquered several times throughout its more-than-two-thousand-year-long history.
Having had such a rich and turbulent history, the fotress of Klis features numerous decorative motifs characteristic of Venetian and Austrian arhitecture. It is precisely its unique historical charm that led it to be heavily featured in HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones, where it serves as the backdrop to the fictional city of Meereen. Aside from being able to enjoy a spectacular bird’s eye view of entire Split metropolitan area, visitors are also invited to explore the charming tiny village lying at the foot of the imposing fortress, replete with lush vineyards and thriving olive groves.
