What To Expect
Zadar has the largest Roman Forum on the Adriatic coast and the Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar founded the Roman veteran’s colony in Zadar. St. Donat church is the symbol of Zadar. You will start in front of Land Gate and our guide will take you through People’s Square (City Lodge, City Sentinel), Kalelarga, St. Simon Church, Roman Forum and Cathedral of St. Anastasia, Promenade, Sea Organ and Greetings to the Sun, where your tour will finish.
Zadar’s incredible Sea Organ, designed by local architect Nikola Bašić, is unique. Set within the perforated stone stairs that descend into the sea is a system of pipes and whistles that exudes wistful sighs when the movement of the sea pushes the air through it. The effect is hypnotic, the mellifluous tones increasing in volume when a boat or ferry passes by. You can swim from the steps off the promenade while listening to the sounds. The old town is padded on the peninsula, surrounded by beautiful parks and city walls. At the heart of the peninsula are numerous monuments, restaurants and cafes and also numerous facilities for visitors such as museums and various shops.
We will visit the Greetings to the Sun installation, Roman Forum and Temple (C2nd ), St. Mary’s Church (C11th ) and Basilica St. Donat’s (C9th ). We continue by St. Anastasia Cathedral (C13th ) and by St. Chrysogonus Church (C12th ) towards square Gospodski trg, St. Simeon Church (C5th ) and the Square of Five Wells within remains of all three circles of historic city walls…
At the end of tour taste the famous Zadar liqueur Maraschino where the production of liqueurs began in the 14th century.
